Anyway!!!
There are 5 perspectives to Leadership
1) Competency (trait) theory
2) Behavioral theory
3) Contingency theory
4) Transformational vs. Transactional leadership
5) Implicit theory
Competency theory states that people tend to assume leaders to have certain characteristics that qualify them to be an effective leader. For example being an extrovert, sociable self confident person is assumed to have the potential to be one.
Seven competencies that are characteristics of effective leaders:
-Leadership motivation
Leaders have a strong need for power because they want to influence others to accomplish goals that benefit the team. They tend to have a strong need for 'socialised power' because their motivation is constrained by a strong sense of social responsibility.
-Intelligence
A superior ability to analyse a variety of complex alternatives and opportunities
-Knowledge of business
Effective leaders know the environment in which they operate
-Emotional intelligence
the ability to understand, perceive, express and regulate emotion in themselves and others
They are able to empathise, build rapport and network with others
-Drive
Leaders have a high need for achievement. An inner motivation to pursue goals
-Integrity
Refers to the leader's truthfulness and tendency to translate words into deeds.
Honesty and Trustworthiness. Effective leaders walk the talk.
This is usually the most important characteristic of effective leaders.
-Self Confidence
They typically demonstrate confidence, are outgoing sociable talkative and assertive-but they also manage to remain humble

However competency(traits) theory has its limitations. It wrongly assumes that all effective leaders have the same personal characteristic. Alternative combinations of traits may be equally successful.
Our preconceived notion that a leader should have certain characteristics may affect our judgment when it should be base on whether the individual really makes a difference to the organisation's success.
Competency theory does not mean that leadership is something you are either born with or must live without. On the contrary, competencies indicate potential. People with these characteristics become effective leaders only after they have developed and mastered the necessary leadership behaviors. People with somewhat lower leadership competencies may become very effective leaders because they have leveraged their potential more fully.
okay... pray a question on this comes up :P
